Is it déjà vu all over again? Yep, the Yankees might be going to the World Championship again. Hang on a sec….. I’m just being handed a bulletin… WHAT??? It’s the Mets that are still playing, not the Yankees?
Impossible! George “The Boss Steinbrenner,” had spent a chunk of his multi-millions on a team that was a cinch to go all the way this year. Sure, A Rod didn’t have a great year and heard more than his share of boos from the home crowd, but they were a
lock, right? The Yankees had their usual run of poor games during the year, but also as usual, they started to put it together in the latter half of the season, and with typical Yankee arrogance and bravado, after all during the last decade as the predominate New York major league baseball team, they were the most likely candidate to pick up the laurels once more.
Check out these stats, The Yanks have won 26 world championships, 39 Pennants and have appeared in the playoffs 46 times. Is it any wonder that Yankee fans expect a winner? The Yankees have not missed the playoffs since 1995 and their fans likely have already purchased their World Series tickets, but Yankee Stadium will be dark during this year’s World Championship. Mets fans are absolutely loving the fact that their team is in the playoffs in a season where the Yankees have exited post-season ball ahead of them. This is first time ever that this has happened. As a Mets supporter it doesn’t get any better than this.
The Mets open at home against the St. Louis Cardinals as the favorites and the Cards faithful are having trouble understanding this as they come into the playoffs with arguably the best player in baseball in Albert Pujols and one of the better (if not the best) pitchers in the National League, Chris Carpenter.
Tom Glavine is scheduled to get the opening game start for the Mets. After pitching a superb four hitter against the Dodgers, that included six scoreless innings, the 40 year old lefty seems to be in good control of his game right now. It should be a great series.
WHITHER THOU JOE, OR JUST WITHER, JOE
“The Yanks to fire Torre after losing to the Tigers.”
“ Torre’s firing expected tomorrow.”
“ What have you done for us lately Joe?”
“ Steinbrenner studying his options for Joe’s replacement.”
“ Joe is still a Yankee, no decision yet on his being fired.”
“ Maybe Joe stays?”
“ Steinbrenner gives Joe another chance.”
These were typical of the type of headlines that we saw in the print media while the “fire Torre” NY soap opera went on last week. Joe Torre was hung out to dry by his boss for a few days, but he will be back to get another chance at yet another championship for the Yanks. The fans expect no less than a World Series Winner next year. They don’t want the Mets to embarrass them again.
