Shaun Alexander had long been one of football's best kept secrets. After a standout career at the University of Alabama, where he rushed for 3,565 yards in four years, Alexander was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in 2000. Alexander spent much of his rookie year, 2001, learning from Ricky Watters, but he got his chance to shine in 2002, when he rushed for a league-leading 14 touchdowns (and caught passes for another two TDs). He put up big numbers thereafter as well, earning his first Pro Bowl spot in 2003 and scoring 20 total touchdowns (plus another trip to the Pro Bowl) in 2004. All those records and achievements, however, only set the stage for 2005. Alexander helped lead the Seahawks to their first-ever Super Bowl, as he scored 28 touchdowns (27 of them rushing), ran for a career-high 1,880 yards and, in the process, won the NFL MVP Award.
