The premise was simple, but the stakes were big. Bobby Riggs said no woman could beat him on a tennis court, and Billie Jean King stepped up to the challenge. In the epic battle of 1973, the Battle of the Sexes, the 29-year-old King defeated the 55-year-old Riggs, a tennis player known possibly more for his flamboyance than his game, in three straight sets. Although Riggs had said he would jump off of a bridge in California if he did lose to a woman, he never did. Instead, thanks to the sportsmanship and skill of King, the launch of the women’s movement in sports began. This 16x20 photograph has been hand signed. A Steiner Sports Certificate of Authenticity is included.
